Présentation

"Premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are often deprived of maternal auditory stimulation. This auditory deprivation can be especially harmful because it occurs during a critical time for brain development. Our research is therefore focused on optimize the sound environment for NICU infants, especially those who are born before 32 weeks’ gestation. In our studies, infants are exposed to their own mother’s voice and heartbeat via micro audio technology installed in the incubator. We examine the effectiveness of this auditory intervention vs. routine care in a series of randomized control trials, looking at various clinical measures such as feeding abilities, weight gains, length of stay, cardiorespiratory events, brain volume, maternal stress and long-term developmental outcomes. Our results thus far (based on 60 infants) suggest that this approach may lead significant impacts on the future of neonatal care. Our follow-up studies will examine the effectiveness of auditory stimulation on long-term developmental outcomes, including attention deficits, language delays, communication disorders and learning disabilities."
